Producer. Drummer. Pianist. Bassist. Visionary.
About the man behind the music.
The embodiment of hard work and dedication.
Billboard-topping jazz artist Skinny Hightower has been an active artist for little over a decade. However, his rapid evolution suggests that he seemingly operates in dog years, advancing his style and skill at a pace that seems unrealistic, all the result of hard work.
Skinny Hightower is an internationally recognized jazz artist, mutli-instrumentalist, and music producer. He as also the founder of Edify Sound Enterprises LLC and a founding member of the group BREADSTATE OF MIND alongside Eli B Breadstate. Hightower is also the first artist to sign with CastOver Records.
During the course of his career, he has garnered three number one Billboard singles as well as multiple top ten Billboard singles. Despite these accolades, he relies on an insatiable desire to improve. “Underneath the layers of being an artist,” he says, “is someone who simply wants to be better than I was the day before.”
Born with a natural affinity for music, he picked up a pair of drumsticks at the young age of two, thanks to his father, Jimmy. Since then, drums have been a staple in his musical journey, rhythm being the firm foundation upon which he builds his compositions. He began playing piano at eight before later developing a love for the bass at the age of 12.
Hightower’s early musical growth can be attributed in large part by his exposure to various styles of music. This has allowed him to graciously maneuver between various styles and genres of music, all while maintaining his signature sound. Growing up listening to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Buddy Rich, George Benson, Fred Hammond, and a host of gospel acts expanded his musical mind at a young age.
Skinny Hightower's music is characterized by lush harmonies, intricate compositions, and a seamless blend of jazz, R&B, funk, and hip-hop elements. His ability to craft sophisticated yet groove-driven pieces showcases not only his technical prowess but also his deep emotional connection to the music. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, Hightower generally takes an active role in all aspects of his projects, ensuring that each track embodies his artistic vision.
“Underneath the layers of being an artist is someone who simply wants to be better than I was the day before.”
His influences extend beyond jazz, incorporating elements of neo-soul and modern urban sounds. This fusion creates a contemporary jazz aesthetic that appeals to both traditional jazz purists and modern listeners. His work stands out for its ability to tell compelling stories through instrumental composition, evoking a range of emotions and moods.
Despite his rising success, Hightower remains a relatively private individual, preferring to let his music speak for itself. He continues to release new music and collaborate with fellow musicians and artists, further solidifying his place in the industry. His commitment to artistic authenticity and musical excellence ensures that his contributions to contemporary jazz remain both innovative and timeless.
Skinny Hightower’s impact on modern jazz is undeniable. With each release, he redefines the genre’s boundaries while staying true to its rich traditions. His work serves as a bridge between jazz’s past and future, making him a distinguished figure in modern jazz and a true visionary in the world of contemporary instrumental music.

An innovator who hates conformity.
Skinny Hightower is known not only for his musical talent but also for his deep-seated aversion to conformity. Throughout his career, he has resisted the pressures of the mainstream music industry, choosing instead to forge his own path. This independent spirit is evident in both his artistry and his approach to the business of music.
Hightower has often expressed a reluctance to follow industry trends or adhere to the conventional expectations placed on contemporary jazz artists. Rather than conforming to formulas designed for commercial success, he prioritizes authenticity in his work, allowing his compositions to evolve organically. His music is a reflection of his individuality—blending elements of seemingly unrelated genres in ways that defy rigid classification.
His resistance to conformity extends beyond his music and into his personal philosophy. Unlike many artists who seek the spotlight, Hightower prefers to maintain a low profile, letting his work speak for itself. He has been vocal about his distaste for the superficial aspects of the industry, choosing not to engage in excessive self-promotion or follow trends that compromise artistic integrity.
This dedication to individuality has earned him a loyal following among listeners who appreciate music that is both innovative and genuine. Hightower’s refusal to conform has allowed him to carve out a unique space in the jazz world, proving that true artistry is about expression rather than expectation.
Inspiration

Skinny’s mother played a significant role in his life. Before her death, she was a personal beacon for him, often keeping him grounded during times when he needed guidance or faced adversity. She was also a major inspiration in his life musically.
“She was definitely one of the hardest working individuals I knew,” he says. “Her dedication to her craft was second to none. She practiced relentlessly, and I certainly picked that up from her. During my time in the military, I would write to her during deployment. The last thing she told me was to keep doing music. More than anything, that’s what drives me each and every day.”
“For the longest time, I felt as though people were trying to keep me in a box. I was subject to what other people interpreted to be an artist. I am an artist, just not in the way people typically see one. And I’m fine with that. In fact, that’s the only way I’d have it.”
